National Microchipping Month is a campaign that encourages and promotes responsible pet ownership through microchipping as the preferred method of permanent identification. Throughout the month of June Tay Valley Vets will be supporting this event by offering reduced priced microchips at £14.40.
We are now using the mini chips which are much smaller than the normal size chip currently being used nationwide.
If you have ever lost your pet you will know just how worrying it can be and understand the importance of making sure that they are properly identified so that, when found, they can be returned to you as quickly as possible.
As a dog owner, you have a legal requirement to ensure that your pet is under control and is properly identified with a suitable collar and tag. In some cases, these can become lost, so a microchip is vital as the permanent form of identification which will be in place for life.
The microchip is 12mm long and 2mm in diameter and is approximately the size of a grain of rice, which is then implanted just under the skin of your pet. The microchip carries a code unique to you and your pet.
The code is entered onto the Petlog database and appears on a certificate of identification issued to you along with your unique Petlog ID.
With one quick scan, any vet, animal warden or police station in the UK will be able to read the microchip number.
If your pet goes missing and is then picked up as a stray by your Local Authority Consumer Protection Officers, it will be scanned and your pet’s unique number will be displayed.
The next step would be contacting the National Pet Identification database and the microchip number will confirm your address, then you and your pet will quickly be reunited.
