Strangles

As of 17th March we have two confirmed outbreaks in the Perth area. These originate from two completely separate and unconnected sources. Both yards are acting in a responsible manner and both have implemented strict biosecurity measures. Infected horses have been isolated and all owners have agreed not to move horses off the yards until the outbreaks are under control. Strangles does not spread far in the air. The main route of spread is direct contact between horses, by people handeling horses and not disinfecting or by shared water troughs. Please be aware of the symptoms and contact us straight away if you are concerned.

High temperature
Off food
“Snotty” nose
Swollen glands

The BHS Scotland has produced a good informative leaflet entitled STEPS (Strategy To Eradicate and Prevent Strangles) which is available at the surgery.
